-Read through and choose from the list of poems for tomorrow's test.  The test will ask you to identify 2 poetic devices, and analyze the theme of the poem, so make sure that you pick a poem that you completely understand.  Annotate the poem that you plan to use for the test, and you will be able to use the notes that you take during the test.

Hello everyone - Happy Monday!

Today in class, we went over the two poems from last week by Langston Hughes - "Mother to Son" and "Harlem".  Then, we began reading our next poem, "The Highway Man".  We will be doing a close reading of this poem together as a class.

Tonight's homework : Here is the link to the Google Slides Presentation on our Poetry Terms. Tonight's homework is to use these to fill in any definitions that are still missing from your packet. Please watch any videos that were not watched in class. I moved the slides around so that they go in the same order as the packet now.  Enjoy!

We had a shortened day today due to the alcohol awareness class.  We did a quick review assignment of the pronouns that we have covered so far as our Do Now, and went over last night's homework.  Some classes got to finish up the class with a game of Kahoot to review pronouns a bit more.  There is also a quizlet available to help students study at home to prepare for next week's test.

Students have been working very hard on their essays - I have had kids after school almost every day for 2 weeks!  Therefore I am giving them until Monday to hand in their final drafts so that they can fully revise and perfect them.

Today in class, we created a top-down web together as a class to answer the question: "Explain how fear led to mob mentality and a hunt for a scapegoat in chapter 17".  For homework, students will use this web as an outline to create a paragraph answer to this question.

  • Do Now question in journals: How can fear and confusion affect people and their actions? What can it cause them to do? What do people tend to do when disaster strikes?  What is the first question usually asked?
  • Watched videos on Scapegoat and Mob Mentality and wrote responses: Respond to each of the video clips with 2-3 sentences for each.  Use the word “scapegoat” in your first two answers, and use the word “Mob Mentality” in your third answer.  
  • Began reading chapter 17

On Friday, we had a quick introduction to pronouns, and then students spent the rest of class working on their book reports.

Hello everyone, hope that you are enjoying your weekend so far!  Friday was used as a bit of a catch-up day.  Students finished up their test corrections, made up any Do Now class work assignments that they missed, and worked together to answer any reading questions that were not completed.  If all of this was finished, students worked on their book report notes.

Today students were given a chance to revise and improve their short answer question responses from their Chapter 1-10 test.  I saw a lot of improvement!

Today in class, students did a self-assessment of their Witch of Blackbird Pond Reading Question Packets.  Then, we reviewed the elements of a quality short-answer question answer, and looked at some student examples.  Students will get their tests back tomorrow, and will use what we reviewed today to revise two of their answers.

Welcome back! Today in class, we refreshed everyone's memories and reviewed chapter 11. Students got back their vocabulary quizzes and we went over the directions for corrections (picture posted below). I also checked everyone's book reports and collected the vocabulary that was done over vacation. Busy day!
